Tapbit news, October 6 – South Korea's Ministry of Science and ICT said the country plans to launch a 4.7 trillion won (about $35 billion) frontier artificial intelligence model R&D project starting in March 2027, aiming to secure a place in the cutting-edge AI race. The ministry said it plans to select a lead developer through open bidding after the National Assembly approves the 2027 budget in December, with the winner possibly announced as early as February.

The South Korean government plans to combine state equity investment with private funds and concentrate computing chips, data and talent into the project. The project will be open to various entities, including single companies, corporate consortiums and special purpose entities, and hopes to let startups, companies, universities and researchers play a leading role.
