Trump administration imposes visa ban on former EU commissioner who demanded review of Musk’s X platform

ChainCatcher reports that, according to CNBC, the Trump administration has imposed visa bans on Thierry Breton, the former EU Commissioner and key architect behind the Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation activists, accusing them of censoring American social media platforms.

In a statement, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated: “The State Department is taking decisive action against five individuals who have systematically coerced U.S. platforms into censoring, demonetizing, and suppressing American viewpoints they oppose. These activists and weaponized NGOs have advanced foreign government censorship crackdowns—each time targeting American speakers and American companies. Consequently, their entry into the United States could have serious negative foreign policy consequences.”

According to reports, Breton served as an EU Commissioner from 2019 to 2024. This action stems from Breton’s threat in 2024 to enforce the Digital Services Act (DSA) against Elon Musk over an uncensored Trump interview on the X platform, intensifying the conflict between the U.S. and the EU over digital regulation and freedom of speech.
